Ingredients

  • Ground beef: 1 lb 450g
  • Olive oil: 2 tablespoons 30ml
  • Onion finely chopped: 1 medium-sized
  • Garlic cloves minced: 2
  • Green bell pepper chopped: 1
  • Red kidney beans: 1 can 400g
  • Crushed tomatoes: 1 can 400g
  • Ground cumin: 1 teaspoon 5ml
  • Chilli powder: 2 teaspoons 10ml
  • Paprika: 1 teaspoon 5ml
  • Salt: To taste
  • Black pepper: To taste
  • Water: 1 cup 240ml

Instructions

  • Setting the Stage: Start by heating the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.
  • Onion & Garlic Magic: Once the oil is hot, add the chopped onions and minced garlic. Sauté for around 3-4 minutes or until the onions turn translucent.
  • Meat Matters: Pour in the ground beef. Cook until it’s well-browned, ensuring to break up the meat as it cooks. This should take about 6-8 minutes.
  • Veggie Venture: Toss in the chopped green bell pepper. Sauté for another 2 minutes.
  • Spice Symphony: Sprinkle the ground cumin, chilli powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir them into the mix. The aromatic fragrances from Damien’s Cheap Chilli Recipe should be wafting by now.
  • Bean Bonanza: Drain and rinse the red kidney beans before adding them to the pan.
  • Tomato Turn: Pour in the crushed tomatoes along with the water.
  • Simmer and Stir: Let the mixture simmer on low heat for 20 minutes. Make sure to stir occasionally, ensuring all ingredients mingle well.
  • Taste Test: Before turning off the heat, give your chili a taste. Adjust salt or spices if needed.

Notes

Tips:
  • Meat Varieties: Though we used ground beef, you can also try ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • Bean Alternatives: If kidney beans aren’t your favorite, go for black beans or pinto beans.
  • Extra Heat: If you’re a fan of some extra kick, toss in some finely chopped jalapeños or increase the chilli powder.
  • Thick or Thin: For a thicker chili, let it simmer a bit longer. For a soupier version, just add a touch more water.
  • Spices Ahead: Always store your spices in a cool, dry place. They lend the authentic flavor to Damien’s Cheap Chilli Recipe, so keep them fresh!
