Ingredients

  • Firm Tofu none of that soft stuff here!: 14 oz (400g)
  • Teriyaki Sauce: 1 cup 240ml
  • Olive Oil for that perfect grill: 2 tbsp (30ml)
  • Sesame Seeds a bit of crunch: 1 tbsp (15g)
  • Green Onions because, yum: 2
  • Fresh ginger let’s spice things up: 2 tsp (10g)
  • Garlic cloves because garlic makes everything better: 3
  • Soy Sauce the low sodium type: 2 tbsp (30ml)
  • Brown Sugar a touch of sweet: 2 tbsp (30g)
  • Cornstarch to thicken the deal: 1 tbsp (15g)
  • Water basic, but essential: 1/4 cup (60ml)

Instructions

  • First off, you’ll want to drain that tofu. Press out as much water as you can. The drier, the crispier.
  • Cut that tofu into nice thick slices. Half an inch should do.
  • Get a bowl and mix in your ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and brown sugar. This is where the magic starts.
  • Mix cornstarch with water in another bowl. You’re making a slurry! Add it to your first bowl.
  • Time to cook that sauce. Medium heat, thickening as you go. Should take about 5 minutes.
  • Fire up that grill! Medium-high is your sweet spot. A bit of olive oil will prevent sticking.
  • Grill the tofu slices: 5 minutes each side should give you those drool-worthy grill marks.
  • Brush your grilled tofu with the sauce you just made. Go on, be generous.
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions for that final touch.

Notes

  • Pressing tofu is key. The longer, the crispier. Aim for 30 minutes to an hour.
  • A tofu press is handy, but kitchen improvisation with plates and a heavy object does the trick.
  • For the ultimate Grilled Tofu with Teriyaki Sauce, marinate the tofu in the sauce for a couple of hours.
  • Got leftover sauce? Fridge it for up to a week. Future you will thank you.
