Ingredients

  • Lentils either green or red, your choice – 1 cup (240 ml)
  • Crystal clear water – 3 cups 720 ml
  • Turmeric powder – Just a pinch say 1 tsp (5 ml)
  • Cumin seeds – A sprinkle 1 tsp (5 ml)
  • Ginger get it finely chopped – 1 tbsp (15 ml)
  • Garlic minced, because we love that aroma – 2 cloves
  • Onions the finer the chop, the better – 1 medium-sized beauty
  • Tomatoes juicy ones! – 2 medium
  • Red chili powder – A dash 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml)
  • Garam masala – To bring it all together 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml)
  • Salt – As your taste buds dictate
  • Your favorite oil maybe coconut? – 2 tbsp (30 ml)
  • And lastly fresh cilantro (chopped) – Because who doesn’t love a little green on top?

Instructions

  • Let’s kick things off by giving those lentils a good wash. Run them under water until it’s clear.
  • Grab a pot, toss the lentils in, pour the water, and get that boil going. Once boiling, let it simmer and sprinkle some turmeric.
  • Parallelly, in a pan, warm up that oil. Once hot, make those cumin seeds dance!
  • Next, in go the onions. Wait till they’re soft and golden.
  • Time for the ginger and garlic duo. Couple of minutes should do.
  • Tomatoes are up! Along with red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Let them mingle until tomatoes feel mushy.
  • By now, your lentils should be soft and soupy. Pour in your tomato-onion mix, and stir it all up.
  • Give it another simmer for about 5-7 minutes. Oh, the aroma!
  • Final touch? Sprinkle that fresh cilantro on top.

Notes

  1. Quick hack: Soak those lentils for about 30 mins before cooking, saves you time.
  2. Fancy a creamier texture? Blend half the soup, then mix it with the other half.
  3. Love it spicy? Adjust the heat to your liking. Maybe even toss in a green chili when you’re frying the cumin.
  • Hot Dhal Soup with flatbreads or rice is the way to go.
  • Drizzle some lemon for an extra zing.
  • A dollop of yogurt or a crunchy salad on the side? Heavenly!
